Ghanaians are demanding an increment in their salaries to enable them pay the new electricity and water tariffs respectively, Ghanamatters.com can confirm.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) last Friday announced an 11.17% tariff increase on electricity to take effect on July 1.
The PURC yesterday again announced an increment on water tariff as 8.01%.
This however did not go well with some Ghanaians as they lamented on their low incomes and the poor state of the economy.
“Looking at the economic situation it is not right as far as individuals are concerned. But it is also a source of generating revenue. So in economic principles if it is going to be used for something better unlike what people’s opinion are then it means it is good for the future generation. But on the other hand I believe other avenues must be availed for people to earn proper or better income so that they can afford, if not then it means the people are already in hardship and they are being burden with this hardship” a disappointed Ghanaian told Ghanamatters.com
Other electricity and water tariff consumers also stated that the increment will affect their lives and suggested to government to increase salaries to make up for the increment in tariffs.
“I think it’s going to affect us because as I’m talking to you now, whatever we are earning is the same it hasn’t changed. So even the ones we are paying now we are finding it difficult to pay. Here is the case you are increasing it the salaries too must be increased to meet our daily demand”
