Dr Kwame Ampofo, a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on NDC supporters to endorse the candidature of Dr Ekwow Spio Garbrah for him to improve on Ghana Education Trust Fund (GetFund) that he established.
He said the New Patriotic Party government would eclipse themselves with the implementation of the Free SHS programme as a major message to voters in 2020 and as the brainchild of GETfund, Dr Spio-Garbrah could submerge the free educational policy if he was given the nod.
Dr Ampofo who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Dr Spio-Garbrah’s campaign Message in Accra said; “We in the NDC, have a perfect antidote to any Free SHS propaganda and it is the GETFUND.
“Because GETFUND, the most important social intervention in Education in Ghana, was the brainchild of Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah, the wise thing for delegates of the NDC to do, will be to elect him.
“What the NPP will do is to flaunt the Free SHS. If we elect Dr. Ekwow Spio Gabrah as Flagbearer, he will easily counter that Free SHS propaganda with the more powerful GetFUND,” Dr. Ampofo said.
He said the GETFUND was a powerful monument to the competence and rich imagination of Dr. Ekwow Spio-Gabrah, while he was Education Minister under former President Jerry John Rawlings and he came up with the idea of establishing a fund that would be dedicated to financing Education.
He said the NPP which was then in opposition vehemently opposed the idea, calling it an unnecessary burden to Ghanaians, but the perseverance of Dr Spio-Garbrah enabled it to become the single most important social intervention in Education in Ghana, serving as the corner stone for infrastructural development in the educational sector.
“Dr. Spio-Garbrah is the quiet type who does not blow his horns and so many Ghanaians are not aware of this powerful story behind GETFUND. The story will become known to Ghanaians when Spio becomes Flagbearer and starts campaigning.
“Once Ghanaians become aware that this single most important intervention in Education is the brainchild of the NDC flagbearer, President Akufo-Addo’s propaganda with Free SHS will fall flat since GETFUND is a superior social intervention in Education, “he added.
He therefore urged delegates of the party to elect Dr. Spio-Garbrah for 2020.
