About a month after the Right to Information Bill was passed by Parliament, it has not been forwarded to the Office of the President for assent.
This is because the Bill is being proofread to reflect the numerous changes made at the consideration stage.
After close to twenty years in and out of Parliament, the RTI was passed by lawmakers earlier this year.
It has however not been assented to yet by the President to make it law even though it will take effect in 2020.
Speaking to Citi News, Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, Ben Abdallah says the delay is due to the slow manual processes of the House.
“They are doing the proofreading with all the urgency and alacrity that the act deserves so I think they are doing the best they possibly can to ensure that the proofreading is completed to be sent to the president for his assent,” he said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo had earlier assured to gladly give his assent to the RTI Bill soon as Parliament passes it into law.
“…I will, happily, give my assent to it as soon as it is brought to my table,” he added.
