The Rastafari Council Ghana, the umbrella body of all members of the Rastafari faith wants President Nana Akufo Addo to ensure the legalization of marijuana to enable the nation reap the full-scale economic benefits of the trade.
Speaking at the 4th National Conference in Kumasi under the theme ” Organizing and Centralizing For Rastafari Development “, the National President of the Rastafari Council, Ahumah Bosco Ocansey posited on how government needs to review the various laws on marijuana to reap the tremendous benefits.
He cited immense medicinal, industrial, economic and recreational benefits from the marijuana trade imploring the setting up of a Commission by President Nana Akuffo-Addo to examine the feasibility of engaging in the trade to realize benefits other nations are enjoying.
The Rastafari Council President also said the Council will soon present a petition to the Inspector General of Police expressing worry at how only members of rastafari faith are rigorously frisked and searched when in a passenger bus or driving through police checkpoints.
He decried such discriminatory approach of policing just on the basis of faith of an individual; hinting that the presentation of the petition to the IGP by the Council will begin efforts at engaging the leadership of the police to ensure that there is a progressive change in the way the Police relate to members of the Rastafari Faith, when going about their duties.
Ahumah Bosco Ocansey also lauded the outspokeness of the late Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, ace broadcast journalist, Kwame Sefa Kayi , former Narcotics Control Board Executive Secretary, Akrasi Sarpong; Blakk Rasta and others on the various calls for the Decriminalization of marijuana.
He said on April 20, marked as World Marijuana Day, there will be a march to raise awareness on the Decriminalization of marijuana.
The day is popularly known as 4/20, a day set aside for marijuana awareness and its various benefits and uses worldwide.
The President of the Rastafari Council further lauded the efforts of some predecessors for their gallant efforts in founding the Council to ensure the well being of members; adding a 5 year development plan is being put in place by various regional executives of the Council to put it on a good pedestal.
The Rastafari Council National President lauded the efforts of the executives of the Black Starline Co Operative Credit Union (B.S.L.C.C.U) in helping with wealth creation of its members to fall on in times of need. He revealed the coming off this year of an Inter Continental Rastafari Conference in Koforidua , Eastern Region , May 22-25 bringing together all members of the Rastafari faith from various African Countries.
