A leading member of the National Democratic Congress Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed has described recent comments on the activities of the Electoral Commissio by the Founder opposition party as hurtful.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings during a meeting with the leadership of the Electoral Commission extolled what he said was the “integrity” of the Chairperson of the Commission Mrs Jean Mensah.
The comments of the longest serving Ghanaian leader comes at a time when GHanians, political parties and civil society organizations are condemning what has been described as the shambolic organization of the limited voter registration exercise.
It also comes after the heavily condemned Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and infraction plagued referendum on the creation of 6 new regions.
Former deputy minister for trade and industry Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed says the former President’s comments would only strengthen the resolve of the leadership of the EC who he says have so far demonstrated a high level of incompetence since assuming the reins.
The NDC has been unrelenting in voicing frustrations with the conduct of the EC Chairperson who has ignored inputs from the political parties and civil society organizations in putting in place modalities for the limited voter registration.
The EC has in an unprecendented move and contrary to promises made to Parliament decided that all qualified Ghanaians throng their district electoral offices to register for their name to be placed on the electoral.
This has led to chaos at the various offices with scores of Ghanaians left disappointed daily as they partake in the 12 day old exercise.
Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed says the NDC’s attempts to ensure that the EC acts in the interest of the Ghanaian will be greatly hampered by the comments of its founder with some assigns of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) already citing it as evidence that the opposition party’s concerns are unjustified.
