The Elections Committee of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is meeting later today, Tuesday, November 20, 2018, to among other things discuss a complaint by former Adentan MP, Kojo Adu Asare, over the just ended National executive elections.
Mr. Adu Asare, who lost in his bid to be one of the two deputy General Secretaries of the party, alleges foul play as his name and picture were mixed up on the ballot paper.
Although media reports had earlier stated that he intended to sue over the matter, Adu Asare dismissed those suggestions.
But Alex Segbefia, who is Vice Chairman of the Elections Committee has told Citi News although the situation was unfortunate, the concerns will be investigated.
“It was an unfortunate situation because it was discovered three hours into voting that Adu Asare’s name was not on the ballot. It was reported to the Electoral Committee, and a meeting was held, and he agreed that voting should continue. There was a process which we duly followed. We first check the ballots and then call the agents too to check them; and if there is a problem, it’s rectified.”
“He will be heard; the complaints will go through the Electoral Committee. There will be a meeting [today] to look at a number of issues on the election, and this will certainly be one of them”, he disclosed.
Adu Asare raises concern over mix up on the ballot paper
At last Saturday’s 9th National Delegates Congress of the NDC, the name of deputy General Secretary candidate Kojo Adu Asare, could not be found on the ballot paper.
Kojo Adu Asare, therefore, raised some concerns because his name appeared as Justice Yeboah with his photo on the ballot paper.
In what may be described as an irregularity, delegates who wanted to vote for the former presidential staffer were left stranded.
Otukonor, Barbara Asamoah elected NDC Deputy General Secretaries
Deputy Director of Research for the opposition National Democratic Congress, Peter Otukonor, and lawyer Barbara Serwaa Asamoah have both been elected as National Deputy General Secretaries.
They were elected at the NDC’s 9th National Delegates’ Congress held at the Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Saturday which dragged into late Sunday evening.
Lawyer Barbara Serwaa Asamoah polled 3, 041 votes while Otukonor had 1, 816 votes.
Per the NDC constitution, delegates of the party are supposed to elect two Deputy General Secretaries who are to “assist the General Secretary in the performance of his functions.”
In all, 11 aspirants competed for the deputy General Secretary position.
