Information reaching Ghanamatters.com indicates that some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered at the Police Headquarters following news report of an arrest of NDC National Chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo.
The Supporters besieged the Police headquarters Tuesday afternoon demanding the release of their party national chairman who was picked up and sent to his house for a search as part of police investigations, Ghanamatters.com gathered.
The police is yet to officially speak on the arrest but report indicates the move is in relation to the recent kidnappings in Ghana.
The arrest followed Ofosu-Ampofo’s refusal to honour an invitation to report to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to assist in investigations into the recent spate of kidnappings and arson in Ghana.
A suspect is reported to have accused the NDC chairman of being behind the crimes, a situation which informed the police to invite him for questioning.
When Ofosu-Ampofo refused to report to the police, they subsequently went to court to obtain an arrest warrant.
The NDC on Monday said it had gathered the information that government was working to get Ofosu-Ampofo arrested as part of a “ploy aimed at lowering him in the esteem of Ghanaians.”
Consequently, the party through a statement issued by Kakra Essamuah, its Director of Communications urged its supporters to expect the arrest.
Meanwhile, some NDC party members have gathered at the police headquarters, waiting for Ofosu-Ampofo’s return to the CID headquarters after the police have searched his house.
