Millionaire MoneySupermarket.com co-founder Richard Mason was left devastated when he discovered his three boys weren’t his as he’d been infertile since birth
A reeling dad sent frantic texts to his ex-wife after discovering he’s infertile and couldn’t have fathered their three children.
Richard Mason’s life was turned upside down when a shock diagnosis led to him discovering his three boys were not his.
The news came to light when the millionaire businessman was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
The inherited disease prevents male sufferers from fathering children naturally and DNA tests confirmed beyond doubt that he had no biological link to his eldest son, now 23, and his 19-year-old twins.
As soon as he heard the news, Richard text his ex-wife Emma, 54, who admitted to having an on/off affair during the 90s.
He text her: “Hi, I went to the Liverpool Chest Hospital today… to finally receive my diagnosis that I have cystic fibrosis. In their experience, they have never had a male with CF who has fathered a child, let alone three.
“They went on to say that it is 98% certain that I am not the father of any children. I was hoping that you could relieve me of [the] further indignity [of more tests] by letting me know now if I am the father.
“I am happy to go along with your advice as to how best tell the boys.”
Kate sent an evasive reply saying: “In spite of what you think I am very sorry that you have been caused such an emotional upheaval.
“Of course the boys are yours, no matter what the science might suggest.”
The news came ten years after they had divorced and the case came to light when Mr Mason launched a legal bid to claw back some of the £4 million divorce settlement his wife received, as well as suing her for paternity fraud.
Kate has been ordered to pay him £250,000 to him but is allowed to keep the identity of the real father a secret, the Mail on Sunday reported today.
Richard is now married to his new wife Emma but says the bombshell has torn their lives apart.
“How are you going to tell your friends and family – parents, aunties and uncles that they do not have grandchildren or nephews?,” he said.
He also has to constantly “relive the agony’ and repeatedly tell his mum what happened as she suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Two of his sons have cut off contact with him as a result of the case.
His solicitor Roger Terrell said: “We understand that it’s a legal first because there has never been a divorce financial settlement set aside in such emotive circumstances.”
