Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George Nettey has said former President John Mahama must be highly commended for his matching the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ‘Boot-for-boot’ comment as it saved the nation from bloodshed and anarchy.
According to him, Mr Mahama’ wise comment calmed tempers among the enraged supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) who were bent revenging after the violence unleashed on their colleague supporters.
Mr Mahama following the violence that characterized last Thursday’s by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon in which six persons were shot by masked men said to be operatives from National Security, stated that no party in Ghana can beat the NDC when it comes to violence and that the party will in the 2020 election respond in equal measure to the violence unleashed on its supporters by the NPP.
He served notice that the NDC will match the NPP boot for boot.
“The NPP is taking this power as a matter of life and death, they said it already that all die be die and they are acting out and living the reality of all die be die. If you turn on your TV you’ll see what happened at Ayawaso West and so we are not going to joke in 2020 and I’m sounding a caution to the NPP we are going to match them boot for boot.”
Mr Mahama added: “I just want to sound a word of caution that NDC has revolutionary roots and that when it comes to unleashing violence nobody can beat us in unleashing violence. It is just that we midwived this country’s democracy and so we must be the first to respect the country’s democracy and that’s why we are acting as a party that is very docile and respecting the rule of law. But if we believe that the government cannot protect our people and we believe that the government is using its vigilante groups and illegal forces to intimidate, harass and injure our people then we’ll have to advise ourselves.”
Mr Mahama’s comment has since been roundly condemned and described as irresponsible by several civil society organizations.
But speaking to host Kwaku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa FM Wednesday, Sam George who himself was assaulted at the by-election stated that Mr Mahama comment was spot on and rather saved Ghana from bloodshed and anarchy.
“After the shooting of six of our supporters, other NDC supporters were charged and wanted to retaliate because they thought there was no leadership. When ex-President Mahama spoke it sent a signal that leadership was going to take the front role in ensuring that the NDC was not subjected to political violence. So his comment calmed tempers.
“He saved this country from bloodshed and violence and if we are a nation that thinks by now we should be celebrating ex President Mahama. He showed leadership at a time we needed leadership, at a time when if we were not careful some of our youth could also attack NPP supporters and we would have had all-out violence.”
