Ghana’s Electoral Commission adopts Yellow, Brown colours for referendum

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it will use yellow and brown colours to represent YES and NO respectively on the ballot paper for the upcoming referendum to be conducted on December 27, 2018 in six areas towards the creation of new regions.

It said the earlier information provided during a stakeholders’ meeting on the referendum in Sunyani to the effect that colours green and red would be used to represent the YES and NO on the ballot paper was a proposal which was not adopted.

A Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the commission, Mr Frank Nunoo, who provided a sample of the ballot paper to the Daily Graphic, therefore, called on people in the six areas to ignore the earlier information and rather concentrate on the sample of ballot paper with the yellow and brown colours.

New Regions

The six proposed new regions for the referendum are Oti, Bono East, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah and North East.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on October 19, 2017, inaugurated a nine-member Commission of Inquiry to look into the viability or otherwise of the creation of new regions which was a campaign promise of the NPP and the then candidate Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections.

For the creation of the new regions, at least 50 per cent of the persons entitled to vote must vote in each of the different referenda, and of the votes cast, at least 80 per cent must be in favour of the creation of a region for the demand to succeed.
