The Minister for the Interior, Mr Ambraose Dery, has, on the advice of the Northern Regional Security Council, and by Executive Instrument, imposed a 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew on Chereponi and Saboba towns and their environs in the Northern Region, effective Thursday, 3 January 2019.
The imposition of the curfew follows the outbreak of violence between the Konkombas and Chokosis over a patch of land, which has led to the death of three people.
A statement signed by Mr Dery said: “The government continues to urge chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them, as well as to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area”.
Additionally, the minister has announced a “total ban on all persons in the aforementioned communities and their environs from carrying arms, ammunition or any offensive weapons”, adding that: “Any persons found with any arms will be arrested and prosecuted”.
