President Nana Akufo-Addo has justified the drone-for-medical deliveries agreement which was recently passed by parliament.
In a subtle jab at critics especially the Minority in Parliament and Former President John Dramani Mahama who have kicked against the deal, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “I prefer drones flying to deliver essential medicines to our people than an investment in guinea fowls that allegedly flew to Burkina Faso without any trace”.
Mr Akufo-Addo, who was addressing the media on Wednesday, 19 December 2018, said the drone project will save lives, decrease wastage and employ over 200 Ghanaians.
He added that 148 live-saving medical supplies will be at each of the four distribution centres and not just blood.
It will be recalled that a guinea fowl rearing project by the now defunct Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) introduced by the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) government did not yield the desired results.
Visits by journalists to the facility where the animals were being reared by Asongtaba Cottage Industry at Sumbrungu near Bolgatanga in the Upper East region confirmed the failure of the project.
The media, during the numerous visits, only spotted a handful of birds contrary to reports that they were in hundreds.
The management at the time struggled to explain the whereabouts of the rest of the birds to the extent it was revealed they may have flown to an unknown destination in neighbouring Burkina Faso.
