Ghana joins the Singapore convention on mediated settlement agreements

Ghana becomes the 53rd country to sign the Agreements

The Republic of Ghana became the 53rd country to sign the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation (the “Singapore Convention”) since it opened for signature in Singapore on 7 August 2019.

Ghana officially became a signatory to the Singapore Convention on 22 July 2020,

The Singapore Convention provides an international regime for the enforcement of settlement agreements reached through mediation.

We have previously reported that the Singapore Convention will enter into force on 12 September 2020. At this stage, the Convention will enable a settlement agreement to be enforced (or relied on as a defence) in the countries that have ratified the Convention – Belarus, Fiji, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

For more detail on when and how the new Convention will operate, see our earlier post here.
