The Dean of Students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) , Professor William Akanwariak Gariba, has confirmed to Citi News that he has resigned from his position.
He however declined to offer reasons for his decision.
His resignation comes a few months after a violent protest by students of the University led to the closure of the institution for nearly a month.
The students, in the wake of the violent protest, called for the removal of Professor Gariba, as well as the Vice Chancellor and the head of the campus security from office, saying an interim body should be allowed to take over the affairs of the institution.
Leader of the students’ group at the time, Yiadom Boakye, said the failure of leadership of the university management was solely responsible for the unfortunate events.
“We call for the following management members (VC, dean of students and the head of security] to step aside. Management has dealt with the students with impunity and total disregard for the rule of law and the democratic dictates. Why will management make unilateral decisions which have a direct consequence on students without consulting students and admitting their inputs”, he asked.
It is unclear if the resignation of the Dean is necessarily linked to that violent protest.
It would be recalled that the University also recently advertised for the vacant position of the school’s head of security.
