Two years after the construction of the Krobo Odumasi Police Station in the Manhyia North Constituency of the Ashanti Region it has been left idle and deteriorating fast.
The police station was built by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in 2012 and it was completed in 2016.
The police station is not being used because of the dusty road in the area.
During a visit to the police station by Abusua Fm’s Osei Kwadwo, the police station was full of spider webs and has been occupied by dust.
Traders have turned the premises of the police station into a market while it also serves as loading area for commercial cars.
Speaking to residents in the community, they said they are living in fear following incessant robbery and murder cases in the area due to lack of police presence.
According to the residents, nefarious activities by armed robbers and criminals are getting out of hands saying they are being attacked every day.
“We were excited when the Assembly started building the police station because the police station was a solution to the problem we are facing. The project was completed since 2016 but not even a single police officer is here. Robbers are tormenting our lives. The police should come and protect us by using the facility”they said.
Some market women told Osei Kwadwo they are losing their capital due to rampant robbery attacks on them.
Lydia Oforiwaa who is a plantain seller said she was attacked by 3 boys wielding weapons.
“I was coming to the market around 5:30am on that very day to give plantains to my customers. On my way coming I saw 3 young boys with guns and knife and they told me to give them my bag and my phone else they will kill me. I gave my bag and my phone to them and they left. I was having GHc300 inside the bag ” she said.
A station Master Mr. Francis Anokye disclosed that last week a boy was stabbed to death near the police station by armed robbers.
Mr. Anokye appealed to the Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Kwesi Mensah Duku to commission the police station with immediate effect and deploy his men to the facility.
